Core Training
I have been truly impressed by the quality of the training for Mentors and the overall expertise in peer support development, provided by The Peer Partnership (under Brigstowe). This project has changed lives and enabled people, who thought they wouldn’t be able to, to develop the confidence and strategies to self-care and manage their condition effectively and in doing so has saved the NHS huge amounts of money now and in the future.
Helene Gibson, Social & Wellbeing Service Lead, Bristol Community Health, Aug 2019
Our core peer mentor training program provides volunteers with all the skills and knowledge to use their lived experience to offer mentoring for those who need their support.
Our core training is modular so can be done as an intensive 3-day course or split into 6 modules over a flexible period. Our training can also be provided either in-person service or in a digital format.
Our core training includes:
- Module 1 – Defining Mentoring
- Module 2 – Boundaries, confidentiality and safeguarding
- Module 3 – Motivational interviewing & active listening
- Module 4 – Project specific training
- Module 5 – Goal setting and reviewing
- Module 6 – Overcoming barriers
Over many years of education, business, and practice, I have experienced numerous meetings and training events. However, I was impressed by the concise, informed and practicality of the advice provided during the mentor instruction, by The Peer Partnership and Bristol Community Health. This was the best professional training I have experienced.

Other Training
Peer Advocacy Training:
Our Peer Advocacy Training talks to mentors about how to advocate for the needs of themselves and others in their situation when facing wider issues outside of their peer support role. This training encourages people to advocate for themselves through collective action and constructive dialogue. This 2 hour training includes:
- Identifying and researching your cause
- Organising a group
- Getting your message out
- Constructively communicating with decision makers
This training can be very helpful for organisations who provide peer support, but do not have the capacity to support their peer mentors to advocate around issues outside of the confines of their peer support program. We are currently offering this training free in Bristol to organisations that run peer support programs.
